[Law's office is trying to cling to calm as well - it's where the man who owns it has retreated for a while for some peace. There are the multitudes of books on bookshelves, and file cabinets with patient records. The desk with the wilds of paperwork that Law is trying to slay. And the comfortable chairs.

The comfortable chairs are important. Essential.

He looks up and puts down his pen.]

Come in.

[A bit of fumbling with the door, and then she opens it, coming in bearing a tray of peace-offering tea. Enough for both of them.]

Good afternoon. Am I interrupting you?

It's more like rescuing me. Doing everything for inventory can get so dry.

[Oh. Tea. Yes, please.]

Do you want assistance with it? [Goodness, Law. She can do paper.] Or is it the best excuse you have at the moment?

[Answer aside, she clears a spot on the desk carefully and sets down her little tray, soon handing him a full cup.]

[It would be effortlessly easy to put off what she's here for, and dive in to the uncertain waters of his desk instead. The same thing she's done for weeks.

Instead, she chooses a chair and sits with her tea, looking at him.]

I won't take up your time if you would prefer it, but I did come here to talk to you.

[Well, he knew she wanted to talk with him from their conversation while he was bedridden, so he picks up his tea and looks at her thoughtfully.]

Sure. What about?

[That's one toe in the pond. Might as well jump all the way.]

A few days ago, I would have asked you if you thought I was...up to the task, still. If I was failing in my responsibilities here.

[It means something, to her at least, that she can look at him while she talks instead of into the tea.]

I'm not here to ask that anymore.

[He would have said no, she wasn't. The time when he was incapacitated proved it, along with innumerable other times, day in and out, crisis and daily life.

But that's not what she wants to know. Nodding and letting her continue.]

You were right, about being...in a holding pattern, wasn't it? I think that was true for me, too. I could not let go of feeling as though I was not doing enough, or was making too many mistakes. Even though I knew I wasn't like this. Before.

[She oughtn't need to specify the event that drew a line to create before and after. Not to him.]

So now I...well, I'm here in part because I did say I wanted to talk and to tell you otherwise all of a sudden would not have gotten me off the hook, would it? [She smiles, a tired one but not the shadowed one of the past while.] And to thank you, for reminding me about drive and talent and conviction.
